Over the last few years, there has been a push from people to be more mindful of nature and more eco-friendly. One of the ways that people have helped to do their part for the environment is buying wooden watches, not only do they keep you close to the outdoors and are more environmentally friendly, they are also unique and stylish in their design.
This same push has also applied to watch making companies as well, who have, over the last few years, become more aware of the need to create a product that is made from more sustainable and natural materials. If you are looking for a watch that will have a more positive impact on the environment, as well as a more positive impact on your wallet, then this list of 9 quality wooden watches will have everything that you need.
Why a wooden watch?
Many people that wear a regular watch report of negative effects on their skin. Many watches can cause itchiness, irritation or rashes on the skin which are unpleasant. The alloys found in metal or plastic watches can irritate the skin, and heat only makes it worse. Wooden watches are made of natural materials and therefore have not got the irritating alloys that regular watches do, making them more accessible for a wider group of people.
Wood is a resource that is renewable, meaning that the watches are often made from wood off of a tree that has likely been replaced. This economic resource management means that forests and woodlands are not threatened and can continue to grow.
They are Natural and Unique
Every single wooden watch is unique in some way, made from a different piece of wood and carved to perfection. Nothing about these watches are manufactured. This is unlike metal or plastic watches, which are made in replicas of each other and in such large quantities that are not economically viable. When you wear a wooden watch, you are wearing years of unique and natural growth, not simply a manufactured piece of steel.
They are Lightweight and Inexpensive
In spite of being so unique, you will be hard pressed to find a quality wooden watch for more that $300-400. Considering the fact that many of the top watch brands will charge thousands for their manufactured and non-eco-friendly watches, this seems like a bargain. Similarly, metal is a much heavier compound than wood is, as well as being much better for your skin, wooden watches are also much lighter, in spite of their mechanical clock face.
1. Svenn Wooden Watches
Svenn is a company that was set up in 2017 with the sole idea of creating sustainable, quality eco-friendly watches for men. They have two main watch series’, Atlas and Romeo. My personal favourite is the Romeo design. Made with 100% tempered wood, this lightweight beauty has a stunning dark blue clockface that works beautifully with the dark brown straps. The glass is scratch resistant and with a 12-month warranty, you can be sure that the quality of the watch is excellent.
There are engravement options available also, and most of the Atlas and Romeo watches come in at 60g or less in weight. The night blue and sandalwood watch that I just referenced can be bought for just $130 also, which is a bargain for a wooden watch.
The option to engrave makes them a unique gift and with each watch sold, the company pledges to plant a tree, so your money goes towards something even more meaningful than a simple gift. On top of receiving a beautiful watch with your purchase, you will get a stunning handmade wooden box as well. They may only be a new brand, but their quality is outstanding, and their prices are competitive.
2. BOBO BIRD Men’s Wooden Watches
Created from sustainable and recycled wood, BOBO BIRD watches pride themselves on being attractive timepieces for the modern man. Most of the watches are multifunctional in their clockfaces, giving the user the date, military time, and a chronograph. BOBO also include additional links with their watches so that you can easily add or even take away links from the strap and adjust it to your liking.
What I love about these watches in particular is the fusion of brown and black on both the strap and the clockface and frame. It gives the watch a professional and clean look. The watches are not all entirely made of wood, there is a fusion of metal and wood, but the design is sleek, and the watches are still lightweight. For their collection, you can expect to pay between $40-70, which is nothing for such a quality and eco-friendly watch.
3. Original Grain Wooden Watches
Perhaps the most versatile and exciting brand on this list is Original Grain. Their watches are made with the sole intention of being original and stylish in their design. The watches are made of Hawaiian Koa wood and are finished with stonewashed surgical steel for added style and comfort. Similarly to some other companies on the list, the Original Grain are wholly committed to giving back to nature and planting one tree for every watch sold.
One of the main selling points of the Original Grain brand is the fact that they are waterproof up to 5 ATM. Their pieces are more expensive than some others, ranging from $120-170, but Original Grain provide some of the best quality for wooden watches on the market.
4. Treehut Men’s Zebra Wood & Ebony Wooden Watches
The name of the game with Californian based Treehut is minimalism and unique design. That is exactly what they achieve with each of the watches in their collection. The aim of the watches is to offer classy contrast and simple design. Their watches have no numbers on the clockface, nothing about the watches are clustered, all you get are the hands and the Treehut logo at the 12 o’clock position.
It is waterproof up to 3 ATM which is convenient because you won’t need to worry if you are washing the dishes or are caught in the rain. The watches often come with a steel clasp to ensure security and an adjustable band that can have links added or taken away. Expect to pay $100-120 for one but expect excellent craftsmanship.
5. Ovi Wooden Watches
My personal favorite watch brand on the list, Ovi watches look to being about a fusion of leather and wood that is handcrafted to perfection. Its best sellers include the Prunus, the Excelsa and the Zelus, each of them fuse brown calfskin and wood in different shades to create enough contrast to look professional and still maintain a vintage look.
The numbers on the clockface are also handcrafted with wood and the watches are available in a range of wood types, from oak to walnut tree or elm tree variants. The glass on the front is sapphire crystal glass and instead of using the Miyota functionality like many other watches do, Ovi uses Swiss movements within its clockface offering the highest quality in both craftsmanship and in technology. Their website has male and female options, engraving is available, and the watches cost between $100-150, a bargain in my opinion.
6. Bewell Men’s Wooden Watches
Another company that prides its watches on having a vintage style, while also being lightweight and unique is Bewell. Its flagship watch provides the user with the perfect balance of style ad comfort, while also not costing a fortune. Its other watches can also be bought online for an affordable price and in a range of wood types, colors, and sizes.
A personal favorite of mine is their dark sandalwood wood grain wristwatch, which comes in at about $70 and has a beautiful mahogany clockface with silver Roman Numerals. This fusion of wood and steel works extremely well with all of their watches, and the fact that they can remain so lightweight in spite of this fusion is mechanical excellence.
7. Gassen James Wooden Watches
Perhaps the brand that offers the lightest watches on the market, Gassen James watches are built for quality. In my opinion, they are also the most stylish looking watch on the market. Not only do you get a unique and 100% wooden strap, you also get the only square clockface on the list.
Its vintage style is offset by its Rosewood construction and its adjustable wrist straps. The Gassen James range uses the Miyota movement functionality and offers up to 5-year battery life and a 12-month guarantee on all of its products. Most of the Gassen range will cost between $60-100, depending on the watch, but considering the unique style and construction of these wooden watches, it is the perfect choice for the modern and eco-conscious man.
8. Uwood Wooden Watches
What makes the Uwood brand of watches stand out, aside from their strap design and variety of available wooden clockfaces, is the fact that they are water resistant. For a wooden watch making brand, being able to provide that level of quality is an incredible feat. Made from Japanese sandalwood and hand crafted, it is polished in its design.
Most of their watches contain a rounded face, but in spite of the small differences between watches, many of the standout features remain the same throughout, all Uwood watches are lightweight and contain the Miyota 2035 quartz movement functionality, which gives precise timing, and they are safe to wear and use in any scenario, containing a secure folding clasp which ensures that your watch will not fall off during the day.
They have stainless steel fusions and also make women’s watches. Their website has sales regularly and beautiful watches can be bought for as little as $25-30.
